Supposedly, Radiohead wrote "Like Spinning Plates", recorded it, played it backwards and learnt it that way, then played the backwards version, recorded it and reversed THAT. That's why it sounds so weird but still kind of makes sense.

And to further blow your mind, "Like Spinning Plates" was released on Amnesiac in 2001, and the original version is actually "I Will" played in reverse with new lyrics sung over the recording, which they later released in on Hail To The Thief in 2003.

If you don't believe me check out this video with a spinning baby...

<lj:music>True Love Waits (Live)-Radiohead-I Might Be Wrong - Live Recordings</lj:music>

It's really weird how a month ago I was thinking that things in my life had been going the same way for way too long and everything seemed intensely boring. All I wanted was some kind of change just to spice things up and make things interesting or at least somewhat entertaining. My job was slowly driving me insane and I haven't seen any friends in months because our whole "group" is kind of falling apart. Then out of nowhere I had ridiculous weeks that completely put everything up in the air. I had been at this company for over 2 and a half years and had never taken more than 2 days vacation at a time, so I figured I'd treat myself to an early birthday present and go to NY for a week, which was awesome. Totally love the city, had great food, saw some great sites and even checked out Masters programs at Parsons and Pratt. I didn't even know how serious I was about going back to school...but with the whole economic recession/depression/repression thing going on, maybe school is a good idea. Pratt was awesome...in a cool party of Brooklyn, big old turn of the century campus with giant brick buildings and sculpture gardens galore. It was all very impressive but I get the impression that it would feel a little too much like I was "going away" to college. There was a cafeteria and dorms and I've never really been in to that kind of thing, hence why I went to art school the first time. Parsons was pretty amazing in a whole other way. I took a tour of the whole campus which was awesome once they weeded out all of the 14 year old girls who just wanted to see where Project Runway was shot (it's actually in a separate studio in a separate part of town, with a fake building front used only for TV and they'd very much like you to spread the word). The New School actually owns a few buildings all off Broadway that house different majors and studios. There's wood shops, metal shops, plastic shops, ceramics, textiles, laser die cutting machines and more, all at your finger tips. There's also private loft studio spaces for seniors and like 5 different galleries that feature alumni work and exhibitions from around the world. It seriously made the Art Institute seem like an after school program. The Masters program I looked at is called PLAID - Product Lighting Architecture and Interior Design and it seemed pretty phenomenal. Not so phenomenal is the $34K a year tuition, but that's another story.

I hung out with Yvette in the city too which was awesome because she fully showed me how to get around and I met a bunch of her friends which was really kind of eye opening. All young creatives in their late 20's and early 30's who actually go out and experience new and different things on a regular basis. They genuinely enjoy each others company and take advantage of all that is around them regardless of things like money, time, personal dramas, etc. The whole trip just seemed kind of inspiring...it's such a completely different way of living and after 29.9 years of being in LA it would be an immensely radical change. Even things like not needing a car and experiencing actual seasons (it was in the 40's there while it was in the 90's here) would be pretty life changing.

Needless to say the whole thing left me with a lot to think about and I figured I'd take November and December to leisurely mull it over and save up money just in case. So I get back to LA and due to walking around in the rain all week I brought an awesome sinus infection back with me. I actually made it in to work on monday, but took a sick day on tuesday to try to recover. Wednesday morning I was back in action and walked in to the office and noticed that all but 3 desks have been completely cleared out. No computers, no lamps, no pictures of family members. I ask the remaining two members of the marketing team that I'm on what's going on and I get two very unconvincing "I don't knows". So I sit down at my desk, and AIM starts up and I immediately get IM'd by an old coworker who asks if I survived? I had no idea what he meant, but he went on to tell me that the entire online/tech department just got laid off. I then speak to our office manager who tells me that the entire sales team in LA and NY were also laid off. Judging by my coworkers lame responses I pretty much figure that I'm the next to go at this point, so I ask them if I should be nervous and they lamely reassure me how vital I am to the company, blah blah blah. Not 4 hours later I get called in to my bosses office and before he even says anything I ask if I still have a job, and he says no. Our new investors weren't pleased with the company's progress so they cut our funding to $200,000 cash per month. This barely pays our CEO and President's salaries so they literally whittled the company down to the top 4 execs and my two lame marketing coworkers. The rest of us were just shit out of luck. If they can't show improvement in ad sales by next spring, they're pulling the plug and the company is done. And without a sales team to sell ads, and an art director to design them, it's not looking too good.

At first I was obviously pissed off, mainly because I was the longest standing employee at the company other than the founder and was literally the 5th person ever hired. Not to mention I had basically built the brand and visual identity that is Access 360 Media and was literally just kicked the hell off the island with no notice what so ever. But the more I thought about it, the less angry I got. I got a decent severage package and really the only thing I actually liked about the job at this point was the paycheck. Plus I had been calling the company a sinking ship for the last year, so I can't really say I'm surprised that the two monkies in charge kind of ran it in to the ground. So I packed up and was out that night. I did manage to depart with two Bertoia Diamond chairs from our lounge area that I had claimed in our last move which was a nice bonus.

So in the end I guess I got the change I was looking for and now I have a whole lot of thinking to do. In retrospect it might have been just what I needed to force me to make a decision. I could have very easily come back to LA and slipped right back in to the comfort zone and never made a decision at all, but now I've got limited time and budget so I've gotta come up with something.

I've also got jack shit to do everyday so if anyone wants to hang out or take up macrame or some shiz, let me know.

I've been working on a project for work that involves sourcing "stimulating content" for the TV screens we sell inside F.Y.E., Journey's and Coffee Bean stores. Basically we are looking for TV/Movie/Music companies that want to advertise in these stores by showing clips or packages of their films, shows and artists. One of our prospective partners is a company called Endemol. You might recognize the name if you watch any bad (and by bad I mean good) reality shows here in the US such as Big Brother, Extreme Makeover, Fear Factor, Flavor of Love, Rock of Love, I Love NY, Charm School, etc.

Endemol is based in the UK so when I began to check out their programming reel for UK TV I figured it would much more high brow than the stuff we have in the states. Surely you wouldn't see people eating pig vagina or shitting on the floor on their airwaves.

Wow was I wrong...the following are some of Endemol UK's highest rated reality shows...

8 Out of 10 Cats
Balls of Gold
Can Fat Teens Hunt?
Celebs On Welfare
Celebrity Daycare Contest
Conveyor Belt of Love
Help! (and also smack it up, flip it, rub it down - oh no!) I was pricing stuff on the Apple site and realized the exact package I'd get in a Mac Pro desktop for $3900 I could get in an iMac for $2400 plus it would be slightly faster and have a larger monitor.

I guess when I hear the word iMac I still think of those late 90's jewel toned suck boxes and that's what scares me.

Thoughts?

Wow a concert review...haven't done this in a while, but it seems totally necessary right now. I couldn't be more pleased to announce that Radiohead kind of blew me away last night. After the second Kid A tour I was pretty much done with seeing them live. It was a miserable show to put it mildly. We were at the top of the nosebleed section, it was a super weird mix of songs, Thom fucked up the second verse of Karma Police. Blah. I had seen them 6 times and I thought it migh be enough...I had been to the Bends tour, the OK Computer tour, and 2 Accoustic Xmas shows and had never really been blown away live...but last night was pretty fucking impressive. A lot of it had to do with the stage design.. which was fucking incredible. I've never seen anything like it...and someone made a collage of how it looks during different songs...

Check out the high res verison HERE.

and a close up verison HERE.

I later read on their blog that the whole thing is LED and solar powered and all kinds of eco friendly which is impressive if you consider how intensely bright and saturated the color was. I seriously can't explain how cool it looks in person.

So, the set list:

Reckoner
Optimistic
There There
15 Step
All I Need
Pyramid Song
Weird Fishes
Arpeggi
The Gloaming
Videotape
Talk Show Host (Romeo & Juliet Soundtrack!!!)
Faust Arp
Tell Me Why (Neil Young Cover!)
No Surprises
Jigsaw Falling Into Place
The Bends
The National Anthem
Nude
Bodysnatchers

First Encore:
House of Cards
Planet Telex
Go Slowly
Fake Plastic Trees
Everything In Its Right Place [True Love Waits intro]

Second Encore:
Cymbal Rush (from Thom's solo album)
Karma Police
Idioteque

So surprised to hear Talk Show Host...one of my often overlooked favorites from the Romeo and Juliet movie, I even had my first lap dance to this song at that Airport strip club. The Neil Young cover was also unexpected and a crazy accoustic contrast to the more electro stuff they had in the set. I think that is actually what really made this show so good...when they released Kid A, it was too radically different from the rest of their music that it didn't make sense when they played it all live. But now with their last two albums being so solid, their whole catalog mixes together much more cohesively. Thom is still a tiny epileptic leprechaun, spazzing out all over the stage..and when they closed with Idioteque it got all intensely dancey and electronic and you could tell the band was seriously genuinely in to it, which is really all I can ask for. Fake Plastic Trees was also surprising...I thought they didn't do that any more but it too felt genuine.

Overall I walked away remembering why I love them so hard, which is a good feeling to have about any band.

About 5 entries down, on July 25th, 2001 I posted about something I had completely forgotten about.

I almost killed Heath Ledger!

"Friday was Marleighs birthday. She turned 21. So Marleigh, Kat, and Marleighs roomate Nikki and I went out to dinner at this place Micelis in Hollywood. Little did we know it was such a high profile area, we would see two big time celebs on the street. Pulling into the parking lot I almost ran over the guy from 10 Things I Hate About You. I cant remember his name but hes the one on those really annoying bilboards for A Knights Tale. Marleigh was pretty pysched."

After reading that I actually remembered that I was driving my old golden Camry out of an alley on to the street and literally ran in to him and he kind of hopped up one leg and on to the hood of the car. To think...I could have prevented a suicide by committing a homicide.

The Jazz was outstanding...4 older gentlemen (see above photo) that blew me away...the piano player plays trumpet and piano at the same time, and the singer/saxaphonist totally reminded me of my grandpa but could sing and play sax like he invented the blues. There was one older couple seated near by that seemed to be even more impressed than we were. They shouted requests, danced, and told us more than we ever needed to know about how they "make whoopie" during a song called, "Making Whoopie." We ended up staying until they closed, and on our way out got pretty much attacked by the couple who assaulted us with a barrage of questions and comments that came so fast we found ourselves speechless, even though we had them out numbered. The lady was overjoyed to see the "joung peoples" (insert cuban/puerto rican{?} accent) and her husband gave us a brief music history lesson about the roots of jazz and then proceded to ask us what schools we all went to. Their grandson goes to Berkely, and they seemed equally unimpressed that I went to Art School as my own grandparents were, when I told him where I attended.

I don't know if we'll ever be able to re-capture the magic (or the whoopie) that was made that night, but the memories will live on in our hearts forever.
